Mark Twain is the pen name for American author Samuel Kindle Store · Kindle eBooks · Literature & Fiction.

Of course, Twains humor suffuses each story: he pretends there is no hero, no moral, to be found in the pages: however, this is a ruse, and the reader needs to be wary. Indeed, Tom strikes everyone as the heroic boy of the tale. Yet, he tricks, cheats, fantasizes, uses his friends, and finally shows up the entire town by pretending to be dead. His famous fence painting act is sheer hucksterism.

Indeed, the only person Tom never takes in is Huck himself, who remains pure and clear-visioned. Tom Sawyer always seems to win the admiration of society--Twains nasty joke.

Readers who laud Tom have proven what Sam Clemens wanted to prove. Only in the story of Huck Finn, wherein the orphaned boy tries to help and save his friend, Jim, a slave, from the ravages of an unjust world, do we see his true heroism. Uneducated and abused, he cannot lose sight of what is right. When friend Tom finally appears at the end of the story, he torments Jim, and reveals at the end that he knows Jim is a free man--but has sport with him.

Huck says little about this, but then refuses to stay for further adventures with Tom. His friends actions have soured him; and he will go west. Few readers seem to understand what Tom Sawyer finally represents to Huck: and it is not the Damon and Pythias of friendship. The stories are always meant for children, but Twain was iconoclastic and irreverent.

He couches his tales as amusing antics of boys, but the reality is more shocking. Even in his later sequels, done obviously for money, he presents Tom and Huck in greater and wilder adventures.

Tom, as detective and world traveller, illustrates the fantastic storytelling of Sawyer--in opposition to the level- headedness of Huck.
